What’s the Difference?: Traditional Ranches vs. Raised Ranches vs. Split-Level Ranches

Ranch-style homes are typically defined by their single-story layouts, with low-pitched roofs and attached garages. Traditional ranches don’t have stairs connecting to primary levels, but two well-known variations of ranch homes are the raised and split-level ranch.

A raised ranch typically features a two-story layout with a raised entryway on the main level. You’ll find a small foyer in the main entryway with stairs leading up and down. The upper level typically includes the main living spaces, while the lower level includes additional living space and is partially below ground level.

House Plan #1-246

A split-level ranch has three or more levels connected by short stairs. The entryway usually leads into a foyer that opens onto two levels. The bedrooms are typically located on the top level and may be separated from the living areas by a half-flight of stairs. All levels are partially above and below ground level in a split-level ranch.

Exterior Features of Ranch-Style House Plans

  • A single-story or raised story
  • Simple open floor plans
  • Low-pitched gable or hipped roofs
  • An asymmetrical design that is usually L-shaped or U-shaped
  • Patio or an outdoor living area that blends seamlessly with the indoor spaces
  • Mixed materials like stucco, brick, wood, and stone

Interior Features of Ranch-Style House Plans

  • An average of three or four bedrooms
  • Simple floor plans with utility or basement space
  • Attached garages, since these homes became popular at the same time as automobiles
  • Living areas that are separate from bedroom spaces. usually divided by a long, private hallway
  • Vaulted ceilings give the impression of larger living spaces
  • Large windows allow sunlight with eaves to cast a shadow
  • Other interior features can include a butler’s pantry, exercise rooms, or home office space

Are Ranch-Style Home Plans Right For You?

While all ranch house plans meet the single-story, open-floor-plan criteria, there are notable distinctions from house plan to house plan within Monster House Plans’ stock of nearly 1,600 ranch house plans.

Size

Select the size of your custom-built ranch home according to your family size, lifestyle, and preferences:

  • Do you need a separate guest suite, a large kitchen for entertaining, or a home office space?
  • How many garage bays do you need?
  • Would you prefer a crawl space — and if so, in the attic or basement?
  • Are there any extra features you’d like, like an exercise room?

Also, consider the number of bedrooms and bathrooms you need and the size and number of living spaces.

Layout

The layout of your ranch is another critical consideration. Consider how you will use the space and whether the layout suits your needs. Consider open-concept living areas, storage space, and traffic flow.

House Plan #52-299

Some homeowners like the style of split-level or raised ranches because they still have that “one-level feel” while creating a designated, separate area, which is ideal for larger families, in-laws, and visitors.

Style

While ranch homes have a distinct architectural style, there are still many design options to consider. The good news is that ranch-style homes focus on the single-level characteristic so you can find ranch homes in various styles — from modern to coastal and everything in between!
